MA in Psychotherapy

The MA psychotherapy course works towards submission of a dissertation, with clinical and academic components,  leading to professional registration with the UKCP and a degree at master’s level.

Person-centred counselling was originally devised by Carl Rogers, and is part of the Humanistic school of Psychotherapy, other early contributors being Abraham Maslow, Rollo May and Fritz Perls. The theoretical framework of our course is both Humanistic and Person-centred, and integrates the fundamental concepts from these schools with contemporary developments.

Respect for the uniqueness of the person is emphasised, along with the idea that therapist and client work in partnership. A central belief is that, under the right conditions, our potential for ongoing growth and development naturally unfolds. This includes the potential to overcome present problems and difficulties from earlier environments, and to live a deeper, enriched life.

The course follows Rogers’ work in identifying these best ‘conditions for growth’, and learning how to provide these within the therapeutic relationship. This is supported by other ideas and practices from Humanistic psychotherapy that allow the individual to release themselves from restrictive habitual patterns and move into a fuller ‘way of being.’

We don’t believe this ‘way of being’ is something that one can just put on at the start of a working day! We place a strong emphasis on the development of personal awareness, and the central ideas, beliefs and attitudes of Humanistic Person-Centred Psychotherapy. These are something that we endeavour to practise and promote in all components of the course, theoretical, practical and personal; as well as in our manner of training, in the relationships between students and trainers, indeed in our daily lives, as well as in the therapy/counselling relationship.

We believe this integrated approach provides a high standard of counselling/psychotherapy training and leaves our graduates well-placed to become competent practitioners in the field.
